2012 was a great year for rock music. Here’s a look at my favourites from the last year and also a few older albums I happened to have purchased in ’12.

2012-Albums-SP-Oceania Smashing Pumpkins: Oceania (2012)It’s no secret that I’m a HUGE Smashing Pumpkins fan. My wife and I love them so much, that we once flew to Seattle for a weekend just to see them live at the Showbox SODO!. We’ve also seen them in Boston, and of course at home in Montreal several times.Oceania is frequently cited as kind of a return to grace for SP and Billy Corgan’s best work since MCIS in 1995. I disagree because there is so much good music in the post-Aeroplane Flies High-to-Teargarden By Kaleidyscope era, that saying Oceania is a “comeback” is just being ignorant. That said, Oceania really is a great album. What it brought back that I love is Corgan’s ability to tell a story through a song and take listeners on a spacy musical trip.I love it.—————————————————
2012-Albums-SG-KingAnimal Soundgarden: King Animal (2012)This is simply a kick-ass rock album. While Superunknown is Soundgarden’s most famous album – and it’s great, my favourite by SG is actually Down on the Upside… it’s more melodic and Chris Cornell’s voice is more controlled than on any other of their records.King Animal is their first kick at the can since they broke up in 1997, and I find it’s a great combination of their earlier heavy rock sound (I’m thinking Louder Than Love, not Badmotorfinger), but with the more controlled version of Cornell’s voice, à la Down on the Upside.A very good rock album.—————————————————
2012-Albums-LZ-CelebDay Led Zeppelin: Celebration Day (2012)If you can’t appreciate a live Led Zeppelin album, you need to stop listening to music.Seriously – wtf is wrong with you?—————————————————
2012-Albums-QOTSA-QOTSA2012-Albums-QOTSA-RatedR Queens of the Stone Age: QOTSA (1998) & Rated R (2000)Both these albums are over a decade old and both of them are amazing. I’ve been a QOTSA since 2002’s Songs For The Deaf, but for reasons unknown, I didn’t get these two albums until this year. These albums are dirty, filthy, rock at its best and make me extremely excited for the new QOTSA album that’ll be coming out in 2013. And even more excited for them to tour (with Dave Grohl on drums!).—————————————————
