My parents’ generation was lucky. They grew up with watching Guy Lafleur, the Richard brothers, Jean Béliveau, Rusty Staub, Sam Etcheverry and tons of other all-time greats. My generation hasn’t had that many superstars in Montreal – really, just three: Patrick Roy, Vladimir Guerrero and Anthony Calvillo. (With a nod to Ben Cahoon and Mike Pringle)

Today, the Alouettes announced they’re going to retire Calvillo’s #13 at their next home game, appropriately on Oct. 13.

AC is not only the greatest of all time on the field, he is off it as well. You hear the word “classy” used way too often to describe athletes who actually have no class. AC is the kind of person you should reserve that word for: A great player, a great person, a great dad & great husband.

Many athletes and public figures in general are lauded as heroes and role models, but few live up to their reputations. Anthony Calvillo is one of the few I’d be proud to have my daugher and son look up to.

Congratulations to the best of all time on a great honour.
