Last night, there was a horrible public moment of Anti-Semitism at a public consultation regarding Chabad of NDG’s building plans.

When Rabbi Bernath finished speaking, Cote-des-Neiges-NDG Mayor Russell Copeman clapped along with several others in attendance. At that point one of the neighbours, William De Horn, stood up, made the Nazi salute while clicking his boots and shouted “Heil Copeman!”

The Mayor angrily told the man that he was offended, specifying that his wife is the daughter of Holocaust survivors to which De Horn responded, “That doesn’t give you the right to do what you are doing in Palestine!”

The ensuing comments have mostly been along the lines of “can you believe this could happen in NDG?!” and “how could such a thing happen”, etc…

When we’ve had half a decade of “leaders” like Pauline Marois and Pierre-Karl Péladeau of the PQ actively encouraging bigotry in the form of the vile “Charter of Values” proposed – and thankfully defeated – in the 2014 provincial election and now the Prime Minister of Canada vilifying Muslim women for political gain and going against the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, not to mention the Supreme Court of Canada, no, it’s not hard to see why people think this is OK.

I don’t know William De Horn, but people of his ilk have been given license and encouragement by Harper/Marois-style politically-motivated bigotry.

It’s time Canadians in general and Quebecers in particular decide once and for all: Are we the country of “none is too many” or the country of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

I choose the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. I choose the “just society” as envisioned by Pierre Trudeau.

What about you?
